Walton Institute and ENTIRE EDIH welcomed students from across Waterford to the Institute’s annual Transition Year camp. The camp gives students the opportunity to explore the Institute, meet with the team, and gain a unique insight into a career in research.

Students from Ard Scoil na Mara, Gael Cholaiste, Newtown, Ramsgrange, De Le Salle College, Waterpark, St. Kierans College and Blackwater Community School attended the camp for four days at Walton Institute at SETU’s West Campus in Carriganore.

As part of the programme, the students took part in a variety of interactive sessions discovering cutting-edge technologies like eTextlies, Mixed Reality, AI, and Quantum Communications. They also had the opportunity to tour some of Walton Institute’s state-of-the-art facilities including the Data Centre and Mixed Reality Lab.

The students very much enjoyed their time at the Institute describing the workshops as “very hands on”  and “really engaging” while also giving them a chance to “figure out the best way to solve problems on our planet”. The camp opened their eyes to the wide range of roles and career opportunities available with some students expressing an interest in studying STEM in the future.

The Walton Institute Transition Year Camp will take place again in 2026. Limited spaces are available. if you or your child would like to take part, please contact hr@waltoninstitute.ie.
