About the Testbed

A Cyber Range provides a secure, sandboxed virtual interactive environment that can simulate real-world feel scenarios and environments, including complex IT environments and attacks on Information Technology (IT) infrastructure, networks, software platforms and applications.

Cyber Explore/Nimbus offers a world-class mobile Cyber Range which is an integration and simulation platform for IT/Operational Technology (OT) systems, which can be used for investigating and analysing realistic breach scenarios and cyberattacks. The mobile Cyber Range can build complex virtual and physical systems, replicate activities representative of typical organisation operations, replicate user/human interactions, simulate realistic scenarios including real cyber-attacks and can interface with external equipment.

Industry Applications 

The mobile unit includes multiple use cases, such as the ENTIRE cybersecurity service, ‘Tailored Cyber-attack Simulation’ and provides the critical capability of in-lab cybersecurity testing, provided through a physical switch, of Operational Technology (OT), Information Technology (IT), specific hardware and Internet of Things (IoT) networks deployed on physical assets such as monitoring and control systems. Additionally, the cyber range environment can load software applications for security testing. The cyber range activities can be mapped across relevant/associated standards and includes a state-of-the-art traffic generator which supports 490 protocols and thousands of attack-scenarios.

Using the cyber range environment, the most up to date attacks (and traditional cyber-attacks) can be simulated where learners/researchers can determine and experience the parameters associated with different attacks, learn how to recognize and handle threats and importantly, truly understand the cyber-attack under investigation. Additionally, the cyber range offers the ability to assess the effectiveness of defence procedures/strategies and to test new technologies before deploying them.
