About the Testbed

The LoRaWAN Testbed is designed to validate and verify the performance, functionality, and interoperability of LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) sensors. LoRaWAN is a low-power, wide-area networking protocol that operates on top of LoRa modulation technology, enabling devices to communicate over long distances with minimal energy consumption. It is particularly suited for Internet of Things (IoT) applications, such as environmental monitoring, smart cities, and industrial automation.

Industry Applications 

Nimbus Centre as a member of the Cork TTN (The Things Network) community, this testbed plays a critical role in contributing to the development and enhancement of the local LoRaWAN ecosystem. The Cork TTN community aims to foster the use of open, community-driven networks for IoT. Objectives of the Testbed:

• Verification of New Sensors:
  • Evaluate the functionality of newly developed LoRaWAN sensors to ensure they comply with the LoRaWAN protocol specifications.
  • Test their ability to connect with the TTN infrastructure and transmit data reliably under different environmental and network conditions.
• Validation of Existing Sensors:
  • Conduct regression testing on existing LoRaWAN devices to confirm their ongoing compatibility with updates in the LoRaWAN stack or changes in the TTN network.
  • Monitor performance metrics such as signal quality (RSSI, SNR), battery consumption, and data throughput.
• Interoperability Testing:
  • Ensure seamless communication between sensors and TTN gateways in the Cork region.
  • Validate the interaction between sensors and backend systems or cloud platforms for data storage and analysis.
• Real-World Scenario Simulation:
  • Simulate practical deployment environments, such as urban or rural settings, to observe sensor behaviour under various conditions like interference, obstructions, or long-distance communication.

This testbed serves as an essential resource for researchers, developers, and community members to improve LoRaWAN technologies, ensuring robust, efficient, and scalable IoT deployments that benefit the Cork TTN community and beyond.
